This work is concerned with the concept of light, to emphasize form and space. These pieces create
a surface upon which to work. Using leatherette enables Manuel to place objects and forms behind
the surface of his images, emerging from the flat surface of the canvas and drawing attention to the
three-dimentionality of the artwork, the viewer is made to wonder what lies beneath.
The light upon them creates and emphasize the forms, depending on the lighting, the artwork will
dramatically change, creating new qualities.
The surface holds a sensuality in the way that one might associate with the body, exploring sexuality
and physicality.
The work tries to occupy our concept of space, creating a physical link between the viewer and the
artwork, this is the concept that interests Manuel the most,
when a painting is trying to overcome its boundaries.
